Prep Your Home For the First Freeze
As I’m sure you all know, fall in Colorado really just means that the weather goes back and forth from summer to winter multiple times a week. That said, even though it was 80 degrees last week, our first freeze of the season is expected this weekend.
Here are some simple steps to get your home ready for the freeze to avoid potential headaches and save money!
1. Winterize Your Sprinkler System
Contact a professional to blow out your sprinkler system to prevent water from freezing in the pipes. (I have contacts if you need them.)
Disconnect hoses and drain them to avoid bursting.
Store hoses in a dry place to extend their lifespan.
2. Protect Those Water Spigots
Install insulated faucet covers on all exterior spigots to keep them from freezing.
If you can't find covers, wrap them with old towels and secure them with a plastic bag.
Don't forget to disconnect garden hoses from spigots to prevent damage.
3. Service Your Heating System
Schedule a professional HVAC inspection to ensure your heating system is working efficiently.
Change your furnace filters regularly throughout the winter season to maintain optimal air quality - every 30-60 days is ideal.
Consider investing in a programmable thermostat to save energy.
Be sure to set your thermostat to at least 65 degrees to avoid interior pipes from freezing and bursting.
Remember, preparing your home for freezes can save you money, reduce stress, and make your living space much more comfortable. If you have any questions or need assistance with these winterizing steps, please don't hesitate to reach out. Stay warm, cozy, and safe this fall/winter season!
